The Public Fibre Guide to Shopping in Veganuary

It’s January, which means several things: the nights are long and dark, we’re all still kidding ourselves that this year will be the year we finally get into great shape, and some of us are trying desperately to resist the lure of a bacon sandwich at the weekend as we experiment with Veganuary. Well fear not, even if you’re struggling to stick to your vegan diet, we’ve got some delicious new vegan brands for you to explore so you can wear vegan instead.

First up is Humans Are Vain, founded in 2019, this Stockholm brand is born out of a desire to rebel against the fast fashion industry that co-founder Chris Margetts once found himself in. Fusing the latest vegan materials and innovative methods with timeless, contemporary design, they’re defined by their commitment to a circular economy, with all products designed to be fully recyclable at the end of their life. Today, sneakers are made from pineapple leaves and recycled ocean waste, but tomorrow, who knows?

Or if you’re looking for a bit more of a statement boot, look no further than Virón which launched in 2020 as a protest against the footwear industry. The brainchild of two established names – Matt Rombaut and Julian Romer, the pair are producing eco-conscious footwear from corn and apples, as well as up-cycled materials like army tents and recycled cotton. Their mission is to make sustainability more accessible. We’re a huge fan of their elevated combat boots.

Next we bring you apple leather vegan accessories from Oliver Co. a British luxury accessories brand founded in 2017 by Matthew Oliver. Their vegan products are hand-crafted in Bucharest by a small team pushing the boundaries of uncompromising, sustainable design. But “what is apple leather?” we hear you cry. Well, we’re pleased you asked. It’s a bio-based material made using the leftover pomace and peel from the fruit juice and compote industry, which is reduced to a fine powder before being mixed with small amounts of polyurethane (PU) and coated onto a cotton and polyester canvas. The result is a durable but soft fabric that is perfect for hardwearing, small accessories and almost impossible to tell apart from animal leather. Smart huh?

Now to upgrade your skincare with Guy Morgan, who’s eponymous skincare brand was founded back in 2018. Guy meticulously formulates products made from vegan and wild-grown ingredients and blends these gender-free products by hand from his East London studio where he promotes the appreciation of small, yet meaningful moments of daily ritual. Our favourite of these the Dagger Rose Hydrating Face Oil for those beautifully indulgent moments of calm that we all so desperately need at this time of the year. Suitable for all skin types too – so that’s a bonus.

Finally for some more vegan skincare, we’re a big fan of London-based brand The Wild Together who have launched a collection of natural and effective biodynamic vegan skincare products. They focus on harnessing the power of the most nutrient-dense plants on earth and fusing them with expertly designed science. Better yet, all products are made in house and finished in 100% recycled, medical-grade amber glass jars and bottles to protect against UV light and eliminate the need for preservatives. Fancy.
